Rapid City Mayor Sam Kooiker offered his second police-chief selection today; three days after the city council rejected his first.
After the council voted 8-2 on Monday to reject Kooiker's appointment of Lt. Elias Diaz, the mayor turned today to the man recommended by recently retired Chief Steve Allender.
Assistant Chief Karl Jegeris has been serving as interim chief.
He said the initial appointment and rejection of Diaz won't cause any division in 153-member department.
“With my nomination for the appointment, Lt. Diaz has already reached out to the entire department with a very positive message of support. And I know that we will be working very well together in the future,” Jegeris said.
Jegeris joined the department in 1995.
His experience includes a special-response team and crisis negotiation. His nomination now goes to the city council which will hold a special meeting on Monday.
