Rapid City Hookah Parlor Loses Booze License

Rapid City Hookah Parlor Loses Booze License
RAPID CITY, SD -

A Rapid City hookah lounge has lost its license to sell alcohol.

The City Council voted unanimously on Monday to refuse renewal of the license for Ifrits Hookah Lounge. A hookah is a water pipe that's used for smoking tobacco.

Police Chief Steve Allender had recommended that the council deny the license renewal.

The Rapid City Journal reports one of the lounge's owners was arrested in April for driving under the influence, and another was arrested in January on a minor criminal charge.

Allender says there's also evidence that alcohol was sold to underage customers at the lounge.

Lounge attorney Stephen Wesolick argued his clients were being "unfairly targeted" and hadn't been convicted of anything.

Wesolick says the city hasn't denied an alcohol license renewal in five years.
