The Rapid City Council has denied Mayor Sam Kooiker's choice of a new chief of police.
The Rapid City City Council voted 8-2 Monday that Lt. Elias Diaz was not the right choice to lead the city's police department.
Aldermen John Roberts and Steve Laurenti were the only council members to vote in favor of confirming Diaz, who would have replaced former Police Chief Steve Allender, who retired.
The council members who voted against the appointment cited a lack of experience, a flawed selection process and a lack of overall transparency on behalf of Kooiker in choosing who he felt was the right candidate.
