Rape Suspect Being Held Without Bond

The former Walworth County State’s Attorney is being held in the Hughes County Jail without bond.

Christopher Jansen, 34 of Selby, appeared via video conference Thursday afternoon in Pierre on three counts of first-degree child rape.

The charges say that Jansen's victims are under the age of 13.

Jansen’s attorney, Joan Powell, did not oppose the prosecution’s request to hold Jansen in jail without bond.

Prosecutors said in court that Jansen should be held without bond because he is a ‘danger to the community and himself.’

Jansen was the state’s attorney in Walworth County from 2009 to 2012 but has recently worked as a court-appointed defense attorney.

Court documents say the alleged crimes happened in Blunt, South Dakota.
