Rain To Raise SD Rivers, But Crests Will Be Lower

SIOUX FALLS, SD -
The rain and snow soaking eastern South Dakota will push the Big Sioux and James rivers up about a foot, but the crests should be significantly lower than last month.
National Weather Service Hydrologist Mike Gillispie says if all this precipitation came a month earlier during the winter snow melt, it could have caused problems. The Weather Service is forecasting a rise of about a foot on the Big Sioux River over the next 24 to 36 hours, but that will take it up to only about18.7 feet - significantly lower than the crest of 21.6 feet back in March. Crests on the James also will fall short of earlier rises.
Gillispie says the wet, cold weather should start to dry out and warm up by Friday.
