Puppy Smuggled Out Of Shelter

December 19, 2011, 5:03 PM by Peggy Moyer

Puppy Smuggled Out Of Shelter
Stolen puppy, 'Robin'

SIOUX FALLS, SD - A puppy has been stolen from the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society and an empty cage is all that remains.

Last Thursday, two-month-old Robin, a cocker-spaniel/husky mix, vanished.

Shelter Director Kori Baade posted Robin's picture on Facebook and made a plea for her return. Baade believes someone slipped the small puppy into their jacket because shelter staff and cameras didn't see anything.

"We just haven't had it happen so it’s just really disheartening," Baade said.

Most dogs are adopted in the $30 to $200 range, so Baade doesn't think cost is the reason, but has no other explanation.

Whatever the reason someone stole the dog from the shelter, employees say they are worried about her health because she had just been spayed a few days before and they're worried she's not recovered yet.

"I think that's our biggest concern. Just to be sure that she's healthy and everything went okay with that surgery. And we have no idea of knowing," Baade said.

Baade says morale is low among staff members because Robin was part of their family.

Given the chance to speak to the person who took Robin, Baade says, "I would say if these people are listening to this story, we want to make sure that puppy is okay, and give us a call. That's all we care about right now."

Shelter staff urges whoever is responsible to return the puppy.

The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society would like anyone who sees a new puppy that looks like Robin to give them a call.

Robin also has been micro-chipped so area vets are asked to scan any dogs matching Robin’s description if they show up on their doorsteps.
