Public Pools Braving The Colder Temperatures

July 28, 2014, 6:29 AM by Kathleen Serie

Public Pools Braving The Colder Temperatures
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

The summer season seems to go hand in hand with spending a day at the pool. But inconsistent weather and cooler temperatures throughout the season mean there haven't been as many days to enjoy outside.

Despite the recent cool temperatures, kids are still spending time in the water.

"I'm kind of shivering, but I'm still going with it," Jataya Ford said.

Jataya Ford's family owns a season pass to the Sioux Falls public pools, and the 8 year old enjoys being able to have a good time outside.

"My favorite part about the pool is swimming and playing with my friends and being able to run and have fun," Ford said.

Which brings consistent crowds to six public pools in the city. But variable weather this month means the facilities are closing more frequently than usual.

"We might close at 6:30 or we might close at five or attendance just drops off later in the afternoon and into the evening hours, but I would imagine that July is about on par, but is probably lower than it was two years ago when we had a very warm summer," Sioux Falls Parks & Recreation Program Coordinator Jean Pearson said.

The attendance numbers for July haven't been calculated yet, but Pearson says the weather will have an impact on the final total. But even cloudy weather doesn't keep everyone away from the water.

"Overall, people still come to the pool, they still enjoy what we have to offer and that's always very exciting but hopefully mother nature will turn around here first of August and warm up for us a little bit more than what we've seen so far," Pearson said.

Pearson says all six Sioux Falls public pools are scheduled to stay open until August 31. If you'd like to learn more information about pool hours and programs, follow the link below.
