A small, vocal group of protestors stood outside the Charles Mix County Courthouse as a hearing was held inside in connection with the death of a toddler.
Authorities say Taylor and Laurie Cournoyer failed to report the death of two-year-old RieLee Lovell. The girl was found wrapped in a blanket in the closet of a Wagner home on July 4. Investigators believe she had died more than 36 hours before she was discovered.
Taylor and Laurie Cournoyer are charged with not reporting the child's death in a timely manner. Court documents show they couldn't remember when they last saw the girl alive. Both also admitted to using meth and marijuana.
Taylor and Laurie Cournoyer were both in court on Tuesday. A preliminary hearing was set for July 31.
The protestors outside the courthouse tie RieLee's death to meth use on the reservation, which they say is a growing problem.
