Former South Dakota Senator Larry Pressler says George McGovern was "one of the greatest South Dakotans of his era" for his Senate service and his work to fight hunger.
McGovern died Sunday at age 90. He was a South Dakota Democratic senator for 18 years and ran unsuccessfully for president in 1972.
Pressler is a Republican. He was a South Dakota House member and senator, and he served in Congress when McGovern was still in the Senate. He says McGovern was always kind to him.
McGovern was defeated for re-election in 1980. Pressler says McGovern accomplished much after he left the Senate as an advocate for fighting hunger.
He said McGovern "was, in many ways, the greatest South Dakotan of this era, and will go down as one of the greatest senators we have had."
