With our busy schedules, even when the snow begins to fall, many of us don't have the option to stay home. But with a storm bringing a few inches like we will see in the next few days, Emergency Management teams are hoping you will stay off the roads as much as you can.
"First thing is first, you need to check road conditions and weather and check what the visibility is. Really assess, 'Do I really need to go?' First and foremost," Assistant Director of Minnehaha Emergency Management Doug Blomker said.
If you decide your trip is a must, then the best rule Blomker can offer you is remember the best speed limit is probably not what it is posted.
"If the road is a 65 miles per hour road, bright, sunshiny day, absolutely you can do that. But drive to the conditions if the visibility is reduced; if the roads are not in good condition, slow down and drive appropriately," Blomker said.
If ever you find yourself in a ditch or stuck, having a survival kit can make all of the difference for you. And so can one other important rule.
"Stay with your vehicle, don't try and walk. We have had a number of people, especially here in the last few weeks, people have gotten out of their cars. 'Hey, it's only a mile. I can walk there,' and they didn't make it," Blomker said.
