Preparing Yourself and Your Bike For Sturgis

August 7, 2012, 8:17 AM by Kellee Azar

Preparing Yourself and Your Bike For Sturgis
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

When it comes to hitting the road for a cross country trip, you never know what to expect.  But riders heading to Sturgis this week will warn you to expect the unexpected.

People from all across the world head to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally every summer.  And while some say the ride is half the fun, one man believes riders should be prepared for anything that's thrown their way.

Many heading to Sturgis this week are a long way from home. Jerome Cunningham, who came all the way from South Carolina, is not only excited about the rally itself.

"The Sturgis Rally, you have a lot going on and it's a good time but it's pretty much the target but riding is my therapy it's like going to the psychiatrist or whatever," Cunningham said.

But when it comes to preparing for a ride like this it takes more than just a little planning.

"I use this right here.  It's called a cool shirt and it transfers moisture from the body to the outside and keeps the body cool.  And you want to have cool equipment but your rain gear is pretty much the most important thing," Cunningham said.

Aside from clothing, it's the bike that needs a little extra attention which is something the service department at J&L Harley in Sioux Falls has been seeing a lot of.

"Busier than our day-to-day stuff but it's about par for the course for this time of the year," Service Manager Dustin Palmer said.

And for some, the busy business of service is not a waste of time, even if you have to wait.

"It's very important to have your tires checked out, your oils checked out and just have a basic check over at your service shop before you leave; anything can happen out on the road," Palmer said.

That uncertainty is how Cunningham and his friends found themselves back in Sioux Falls.

"One of the guys experienced a problem with his bike as we were getting there and we determined he had a wheel bearing problem so that's what ended us up here," Cunningham said.

But at the end of the day, for Cunningham and his friends, only one thing matters.

"If she is starting and firing on all cylinders and spark plugs are clean you are ready to roll," Cunningham said.
