He was a standout at O'Gorman and earned a scholarship to play football at the University of South Dakota. Now Will Powell will continue his dream of seeing the world while playing the game he loves.
On January 10th USD's all time receiving touchdown leader, Will Powell, will leave to play professional football in France. Only two Americans are allowed per team, so Powell will be asked to be a leader right away.
"The coaches have talked to me about coaching the other players on things I have learned form playing over here. With only two American players, it's going to be crazy playing with a bunch of French guys, but I couldn't be more excited," Former USD Wide Receiver Will Powell said.
The only question now is will he understand the plays in French?
"I just bought Rosetta Stone a couple months ago and I have been practicing my French. The whole team speaks English, so there shouldn't be too much of a barrier there. Hopefully I’ll pick up some French while I'm there," Powell said.
One word that is understood around the world is championship. Powell will play wide receiver and safety for the defending French champion, Nimes Centurions, and their already talented roster.
"My quarterback last year through 36 touchdowns, so I want to have at least 20 touchdowns and maybe a couple of interceptions. I haven't played safety since I was a freshman in college, so that will be a little different. First and foremost I just want to win a championship," Powell said.
A football championship there doesn't nearly equate to a Super Bowl here. However if he can put up the numbers he racked up as a Coyote and lead his team to a Euro Bowl title, he may catch the eyes of an NFL scout.
"Obviously the competition isn't what it is here in the NFL. I expect to go over there and dominate. Hopefully I can get some good film, and then you never know what might happen. Maybe someone in the U.S. or Canada sees it and I'll be able to come back over here with a chance to play at a higher level," Powell said.
