Sioux Falls Police believe they've arrested a drug dealer after finding large amounts of marijuana, mushrooms and cash in a central Sioux Falls home.
Brian Berke, 38, was arrested Wednesday night after the Sioux Falls drug task force served a search warrant on Berke's home at 501 North Prairie Avenue.
Berke was just in court on Tuesday for misdemeanor marijuana possession but he was back in court Thursday facing the more serious charges.
"However this information came about I think it's safe to say we found someone who's been dealing quite a bit of marijuana," Sioux Falls Police Public Information Officer Sam Clemens said Thursday morning.
Two pounds of marijuana was discovered inside the house along with ten ounces of psychedelic mushrooms, hash oil, $18,000 in cash, a shotgun and bags of shotgun shells. A digital scale was also found.
Berke lives at the house and was arrested on several felony drug possession and distribution charges that carry more 40 years in prison.
"I think the charges reflect that, but I think they probably had an idea he had been dealing primarily in marijuana," Clemens said.
In court Thursday, attorneys said Berke was in court earlier this week for possessing small amounts of marijuana. The new charges are more serious, but it’s unclear if that arrest led to the warrant and the discovery inside Berke's home.
Sioux Falls Police say the drug task force is always trying to find the dealers in the city in an effort to put a dent in the drug trade in Sioux Falls.
"They're always kind of working their way up the chain trying to get those people that are dealing the drugs and supplying those drugs and trying to find out who those individuals are and try to get them off the street," Clemens said.
Two others were also arrested in the bust, 55-year-old Clair Hennings and 38-year-old Darin Wilson. They face less serious possession and paraphernalia drug charges.
Berke is being held on a $5,000 bond. During his first court appearance Thursday, Berke said that he will be hiring his own attorney.
