Positively KELOLAND: SF Business Collects School Supplies On First Friday

A downtown Sioux Falls business is collecting school supplies for students in need during First Friday.

Melanie Erickson is collecting school supplies at The Bead Co.

"I thought it would be fun to do a back-to-school event and of course, Project SOS is a perfect fit," Erickson said.

Last month, Project SOS handed out more than 6,000 fully-stocked backpacks. Yet organizers say there is still a need in the community.

"Project SOS is an ongoing project," The Banquet Executive Director Tamera Jerke-Liesinger said.

Wide-ruled loose leaf paper and a box of washable markers are at the top of items needed for Project SOS.

"This is when all the back-to-school stuff is starting to go on sale. This is when we are really hunting for those bargains and asking others to hunt for those bargains to get us the school supplies that we are going to need for next year's giveaway. We are always working a year ahead," Jerke-Liesinger said.

There are other ways you can donate. For a $2 donation, The Bead Co. will give back a piece of chalk for the walk. Donors can use it themselves during First Friday or give it to one of the Eugene Fields A+ Elementary students who are invited to the donation drive.

"We don't have any expectations we are just going to do our best and have fun and see how it goes and hopefully do it bigger next year," Erickson said.

Participants can also create a Beaded Bookmark or Bubble Wand for a $5 donation.

Erickson says all the proceeds from that evening will also go to Project SOS.
