Political Scams Increase As Election Nears

November 1, 2012, 2:15 PM by Angela Kennecke

Political Scams Increase As Election Nears

As the election nears, consumers are being targeted by con artists who are using legitimate sounding offers to steal your money.

If someone calls you asking you to take a public opinion survey in exchange for a cruise, don't buy it. The scammers then ask for your credit card number to cover so-called port fees and taxes.

Legitimate polling companies don't offer prizes for taking a survey and don't take your credit card number.

Another scam asks you for a political donation and then asks for your credit card or bank number over the phone.

The Better Business Bureau says if you want to give money to a political campaign or party, look up the information online and give to the group directly.

Finally, you may get an email or phone call from someone claiming to be from your local board of elections, asking to check up on your voter eligibility.

But don't fall for it. Local election boards don't request Social Security numbers or credit card numbers online to confirm voter registration.
