Police Prepare To Work All Night At Standoff

December 24, 2012, 6:12 PM

Police Prepare To Work All Night At Standoff
MARION, SD -

As of 6 p.m., authorities were still on the scene of a standoff in Marion, South Dakota.

The initial call came in at 9 a.m. Monday saying a person had barricaded himself in his grandmother's house. The suspect's grandmother and a cousin were inside at the time.

This is the same man police were looking for Sunday night in connection with a high speed chase that involved three different counties.

Police say the suspect is communicating with them, but he is considered armed and dangerous.

Around 4:30 p.m. the suspect released the teen hostage. Earlier in the day, the grandmother was let out of the house, as well.

Now, instead of a hostage situation, police are treating this like a barricaded subject. Authorities are preparing to be on the scene, just west of Main Street in Marion, for a very long time. Police put up flood lights near the house around 5:30 p.m.

And police have reason to believe that the subject is armed. But, they have not seen any guns. They do also believe that he is agitated. They say they have been working with that for most of the day. Because of the agitation, police are being very cautious on the scene.

Police continue to try to communicate with the suspect and resolve the situation peacefully. But, this could be a long night.
