A boy who died after an alleged assault last week has been identified.
Sioux Falls Police say two-year-old Tyrese Robert Ruffin died on Friday. He was taken to a hospital on Wednesday after being found unresponsive at a Sioux Falls apartment.
27-year-old Joseph Patterson was charged with aggravated battery on an infant and aggravated assault before the boy died. The Lincoln County State's Attorney is now looking into whether new charges will be filed in the case.
Police say Patterson was alone with the boy at a southwest Sioux Falls apartment when the assault happened. The medical call came in as a choking. But when the unresponsive boy was taken to the hospital, doctors determined his head injuries were the result of an assault, not an accident.
The judge set Patterson's bond at $750,000 dollars.
Authorities have not identified the boy's mother; Ruffin is the son of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson.
