We now know the name of the driver who crashed into the Ramada on West 12th Street in Sioux Falls on Monday.
Police say 21-year-old Andrew Severson of Sioux Falls was driving east Monday afternoon around 4:30 p.m. when his vehicle veered off the road and went through a gas station parking lot before crashing into the hotel. Witnesses estimate Severson was driving between 40- to 50-miles-per-hour at the time of the crash.
Severson was arrested on scene for DWI. Police pulled several pill bottles from the car, as well as two compressed air bottles used to clean computer keyboards.
“He was taken from the scene to the hospital and they got blood right away. The hope is there'll be something there, but I guess we won't know until that blood work is done,” Sioux Falls Police Public Information Officer Sam Clemens said.
Police say if Severson was huffing, those chemicals usually leave the blood stream quick and can be tough to trace.
Officers estimate about $20,000 worth of damage was done to the hotel building.
Severson will be in court Tuesday afternoon facing DWI charges.
