Pierre has named Capt. Dave Panzer Jr. as police chief for the South Dakota capital city.
Mayor Laurie Gill and City Commissioner Jim Mehlhaff made the announcement Thursday night to the entire police department staff.
Gill says Panzer received a standing ovation from his department colleagues when the announcement was made.
City commissioners are expected to give final approval to the selection at Tuesday night's meeting.
Panzer has been serving as interim chief while the city searched for a permanent replacement for retiring chief Bob Grandpre.
Panzer is a 25-year veteran of the Pierre force.
