Planning For Cone Zone Season

SIOUX FALLS, SD -
It won't belong before the cone zones pop up around the state. That includes inside the Sioux Falls City limits where several large projects are on the docket.
The city of Sioux Falls is just beginning its bid process for the miles of road construction projects across town. It's going to be another busy year for infrastructure upgrades on city and state projects. That will mean traffic delays, and even major closures in some instances, including on Marion Road, where the car count keeps rising.
Marion Road between 26th Street and 41st Street has reached its limit. That means it's time to move from three lanes to five.
“With the interchange at Marion Road at I-90, this entire corridor on Marion Road down to 57th Street is gonna be much busier,” Sioux Falls City Engineer Chad Huwe said.
Right now about 13,000 cars hit the pavement here each day. Huwe expect that number to nearly double. That's one reason for the project. The other, is the concrete is just worn out.
“We'll build the east half while we have cars on the west half. Once that's done we'll flip-flop them around,” Huwe said.
That will mean some delays, and maybe even limited access for short periods of time here. Huwe says the project will take all summer and could last into 2013. Marion Road is just one of almost 40 construction projects on tap around Sioux Falls.
“It's not just streets. It's water, its sewer, it's drainage, just a lot of good things going on,” Huwe said.
Marion Road is already expanded between 12th Street and 26th Street.
The coming project will expand those additional lanes all the way south to 39th Street.
And crews won't be done there, the long-term plan for Marion Road is to have a five lane surface all the way through town to 57th Street in order to accommodate the traffic increase.
