The 27-year-old Sioux Falls man accused of killing a toddler earlier this month is now being held on a $1 million bond.
Joseph Patterson made his first court appearance Tuesday after being indicted on murder and manslaughter charges.
Patterson was first arrested October 10; at the time, authorities said he caused severe head injuries to two-year-old Tyrese Ruffin. Ruffin, the biological son of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson, died the next day.
The Lincoln County grand jury returned the indictment against Patterson late Friday after hearing testimony from investigators with the Sioux Falls Police Department and the doctor who is working on the autopsy.
Patterson made a video appearance in the Lincoln County Courthouse from the Minnehaha County Jail Tuesday and said that he has hired Rapid City criminal defense attorney Tim Rensch to represent him instead of a public defender.
"I think he's absolutely and completely not guilty and I'm ready to prove that," Rensch told KELOLAND News over the phone on Tuesday.
Rensch has handled several high profile criminal defense cases in South Dakota, however he was not in court Tuesday when the judge increased Patterson's bond because of the serious nature of the charges to $1 million.
Patterson was asked if he wanted to address bond himself, but he declined saying he's going to let his attorney do all the talking.
Patterson is scheduled to be back in court Monday when he will be arraigned on the new charges.
Rensch said he plans to be in Canton Monday to represent the 27 year old.
