Parkston Residents Clean Up From Floods

June 14, 2010, 4:52 PM by Brian Kushida

Parkston Residents Clean Up From Floods
PARKSTON, SD - Homeowners in Parkston are still dealing with the ripple effects of this past weekend's rainfall.  Pony Creek cuts through the middle of the town, and spilled its banks Saturday, flooding streets and yards.  The water has gone down a bit, but it's still causing headaches for people in the area.

A weekend of wet weather has left the Pony Creek in Parkston riding high and wild.

And while the worst of the flooding is over, the pony continues to saddle homeowners' basements with water.

"I stepped off the last step and I was in three inches of water," Parkston resident Ralph McGregor said.

It was McGregor's worst fear realized. He woke up today to soggy steps in his basement and spent most of the morning drying out.

In all, McGregor estimates he removed about 100 gallons of water from just his basement.

But with Pony Creek still flooded and more showers possible, McGregor can only wait, and prepare for the worst.

"Just say hey, we know the rains come and the rains go. We're just going to have to grin, and bear it," McGregor said.

And try to make sure next time around, his sump pump can reign in the pony.

Several of McGregor's neighbors also had flooded basements, but aren't getting to them until Monday night, after getting home from work.
