Parent Petitions To Stop School Consolidation

November 13, 2012, 12:10 PM

Parent Petitions To Stop School Consolidation
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Some people against the idea of consolidating three schools in Sioux Falls are taking their concerns to the internet.

Hundreds of people have signed actual petitions and voiced their concerns at school board meetings.  Now a local Sioux Falls School district dad has created another avenue.

David Andersen started an online petition at change.org this weekend and it already has more than 50 signatures.

It urges school board members to vote against consolidating Mark Twain, Jefferson and Longfellow Elementary Schools into one new school that would be built at the Mark Twain site.

On the online petition website, one person says these schools are assets to the neighborhoods.  Other comments say smaller schools such as these are better for students.

The president of the Sioux Falls School Board says officials are listening.

"I respect them and I know they moved into those communities and the school is part of the community. I don't want to devalue their opinion. I certainly understand their side of it. The school board has a very difficult decision to make and I know we won't make everyone happy," Douglas Morrison said.

The school board is scheduled to vote on November 26.

Tonight on KELOLAND News we'll have more from Morrison and meet the man behind this latest effort.
