Pain Of Husband's Death Will Last A Lifetime

Pain Of Husband's Death Will Last A Lifetime

It's been about a year-and-a-half since Eric Robert and Rodney Berget killed Correctional Officer Ron Johnson during their failed escape attempt at the state penitentiary.

While much of the focus has been on Robert and the execution, it all comes at the cost of a correctional officer's life.

It only took two minutes for Robert to stop moving after the lethal injection began. But the widow of the man he killed says the pain he caused will last a lifetime.

“We, Ron’s children and me, want everyone, please do not forget how kind, wonderful and caring Ron Johnson is,” Ron Johnson’s widow Lynette Johnson said.

After Monday night’s execution Johnson spoke candidly about the husband that was taken away from her.

“We know this execution tonight is not going to bring back my husband to me. It’s not going to bring our children's father back to them; our six grandchildren's Papa back to them.  But we do know that the employees of the Department of Corrections and the public in general will be just a little bit safer now,” Johnson said.

And while time may heal wounds, Johnson says this one is very deep and that the pain Robert caused will last a lifetime.

“Ron, none of you will know how greatly he is going and is missed. We stand proud for Ron,” Johnson said.

Johnson says there's still much to be done to ensure all those responsible for her husband's death answer for what they did.
