Outdoor Workers Grin And Bear Cold Weather

January 22, 2013, 5:50 AM by Austin Hoffman

Outdoor Workers Grin And Bear Cold Weather
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Some people are able to stay in comforts of indoors during cold spells, but for those who have an office outside, that's not an option.

Warm clothes may help; attitude might be the biggest factor to keep the cold from slowing you down.

"I'm 67 years old, I just don't move very fast anytime," Gil Vanhill with Marv’s Sanitary Service said.

Vanhill has been taking out the garbage for around 30 years.

"Everybody has garbage so you don't have to worry about not having something to do," Vanhill said.

He says the cold is something you just have to deal with.

"Put on a lot of clothes. I got insulated trousers, sweatshirt, a heavy shirt and coveralls over top. But then if it does get warm you can just shred some off and go on, you know," Vanhill said.

He does get short breaks from the furry of Mother Nature between pick-ups, but the cold is always biting back.

“Like right now, I got kinda a sore throat, little bit of a cough. You get in and out from the cold and warmth, it's pretty easy to get a [cold], especially this time of year. But nothing serious,” Vanhill said.

Vanhill keeps a pretty light attitude about the cold weather and didn't seem too bothered by it. He did say he would prefer 100 degrees compared to this, just not the humidity. But change is never too far away.

"Like they say, wait a day or two and it will change," Vanhill said.

He did say one of the good things when it’s this cold is that there is no smell. But even when it’s hot out, he says it's just something you get used to.
