The South Dakota Legislature passed a bill allowing people to sign up to save a life online. By checking the organ donation box, you can impact someone you don't even know.
"You can restore somebody's life, somebody's viability and experience that has been impacted negatively in some way shape or form," Allison Hauck with the South Dakota Lion's Eye and Tissue Bank said.
A new name is added to the national transplant waiting list every 12 minutes, but 18 people die each day waiting for an organ transplant. Registering to be a donor gives hope to those in need. Now South Dakota has multiple, simple ways to become an organ donor.
"Check the box on your driver’s license when you renew or go on to South Dakota Department of Transportation website and check the box or go to donatelifesd.org," Hauck said.
The Lion's Eye and Tissue Bank says the next step in becoming an organ donor is very important. You need to tell the ones you love the most.
"Tell your family. Make sure they know what it is that you want to happen in your life when you're done using this lovely vessel you've been given," Hauck said.
For the online registry you just need your name, driver's license number, date of birth and the last four digits of your social security number. You can either add your name to the registry or remove it. To register, click here.
