Ohio Airport Scares Geese With Tall Grasses

One U.S. airport is taking a unique approach to prevent deadly collisions involving birds and planes.

Officials in Dayton, Ohio have decided to plant 300-acres of tall prairie grass near the runways. Typically, large birds like geese, avoid long grasses because they fear predators might be hiding in them.

It's a familiar struggle at South Dakota airports. The Rapid City Airport uses timer-controlled cannons, horn blasts and hand-held cap-guns to scare the birds away. Several years ago, the Sioux Falls airport brought in a dog to chase away the geese.
