O'Gorman, Roosevelt Ready For Dakota Bowl

August 29, 2012, 10:13 PM by Matt Holsen

O'Gorman, Roosevelt Ready For Dakota Bowl
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

It will be an arch-rivalry renewed this Saturday when No. 4 O'Gorman hosts No. 3 Roosevelt in the 34th annual Dakota Bowl.

Over the past few years, clashes between the two football powerhouses have been decided by a touchdown or less. And with plenty of fresh faces on both sides, this weekend's bowl game could once again go down to the wire.

"To beat them is always a feather in our cap and if we can do it at Dakota Bowl, feels a little sweeter," Roosevelt Head Coach Kim Nelson said.

Nelson has a long history of coaching against O'Gorman and when he picks up a victory, it's cause for a little celebration. Nelson and the Rough Riders have claimed two straight against the Knights.

And when it comes to Saturday's game, he says depth will be key if Rosie hopes to win again.

"They're playing a lot of guys both ways. I think we have to be patient on offense and not try to quick-strike them or anything and just use the advantage that we have, not playing guys both ways, to maybe be fresher at the end of the game, at the end of the half," Nelson said.

The Riders cruised to victory in their first game over Aberdeen Central 49-8 thanks in part to sophomore Quarterback Taryn Christion. The first-year starter turned some heads with a three touchdown performance.

"They don't drop off a whole lot. He gives them a lot of things there. They've got some other skill kids that are just now on the field that haven't been on the field that are pretty good athletes. They've got an exciting team," O’Gorman Head Coach Steve Kueter said.

While both clubs feature plenty of youngsters getting time, O'Gorman's offense is entirely new.

But thanks to a one-two punch in Nic Steffl and Tanner Schulte in the backfield, the Knights nearly knocked off the No. 2 Lynx last Friday.

"I was pleased with the way we played against Brandon Valley but we have a long way to go in that respect. Defensively we have some starters back, we had some consistency there. Offensively, we need a lot of work but it's a group of kids that I think are going to be pretty good," Kueter said.

We'll get a chance to see if O’Gorman has improved from week one this Saturday at Howard Wood Field. The Knights will be trying not to fall to 0-2. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
