SIOUX FALLS, SD -
The "Celebrate My Drive" contest is sponsored by State Farm Insurance as part of national "Teen Driver Safety" week.
The top 90 schools win grants worth $25,000, and the top 10 win $100,000!
"As a teenager, driving is a big part of their lives. And to make sure we are giving them the right tools. And keeping in front of them the importance of driving a vehicle while not being distracted," O'Gorman High School principal, Kyle Groos said.
O'Gorman is at the top of the leader board, currently in 7th place. Washington is around 520th, and Sioux Falls Christian is in about 600th place. Huron is also doing well in 23rd place.
Today O'Gorman used the lunch hour to give students a chance to vote.
"We're getting really excited about it. And the students are also learning more about different driving hazards and with texting and driving," O'Gorman student, Kylie Lamberty said.
"We've all kind of gotten addicted to it, to see at the end of each day where we sit as a school. So it's kind of become a very a part of our life for the last 8 to 9 days," Groos said.
Voting online is very easy. First it will ask you for your email address and age. You must be 14 years-old to vote, and you can vote once a day per email address. So if you have more than one email you can vote more than once a day. You then select the school you want to vote for. It will then ask you questions about driver safety. You just click submit and vote for your favorite school.
Not only do top schools get money, but the top two will win a concert with Grammy award-winner, Kelly Clarkson.
"I don't know if I've heard a single student say they haven't voted. You just constantly hear people saying, yeah I made sure to use my mom's email address and my email address. And just trying to get as possibly involved as they can," Junior at O'Gorman, Lauren Weber said.
"We want to win. We don't like to lose at O'Gorman," Lamberty said.
You can vote for your favorite school by going to CelebrateMyDrive.com and answering a few safety questions.
