The Oglala Sioux Tribe and Rosebud Sioux Tribe filed a class action lawsuit against Pennington County Thursday morning in Rapid City.
The tribes allege that the State has violated the rights of Indian families by placing children into foster care without proper due process.
People gathered outside the federal building in Rapid City to show their support for the lawsuit Thursday morning.
“They need to get on task with this. They need to follow the law. It comes down to the children. It traumatizes our children, taking them off of the reservation, putting them into non-Indian homes. It traumatizes our families, that the children are taken away from, that's just the bottom line,” Bob Walters with the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe said.
