There will soon be a new attraction in downtown Sioux Falls, an interactive water fountain. The new fountain on East 8th Street won't be running for a few weeks, but city officials recently tested it.
"This is some first date, huh," Alli Michaelis said.
Alli Michaelis already enjoys hanging out by the Big Sioux River, but says it just got better.
"It's really cool. I mean I was just walking here and saw it and thought I'd come check it out. I've never seen it before," Michaelis said.
Neither has anyone else. The fountain is part of the second phase of the Sioux Falls river greenway project and this is just a test.
"I ride my bike down here all the time and was just down here on Monday and didn't see it and now it's on and it's really cool," Michaelis said.
The city can't run the fountain right now because construction crews working on the the new Hilton hotel are directly overhead. But when it does open to the public, kids and anyone else will be welcome to get wet.
"It's all safe. It's all UV filtered water, self contained water. They got the benches and the seats, you can lay down, put towels down and just relax for a little bit." Architectural Aquatics fountain builder Scot Hogel said.
Hogel also built a fountain in downtown Rapid City. And says the one in Sioux Falls is already attracting a lot of attention.
"As we were setting up, people are walking by with their families and they're looking at it and they're like, 'we'll be back, we'll be back.' Just testing, it has drawn a pretty good crowd, watching us test it," Hogel said.
"It's gorgeous," Michaelis said.
And Michaelis plans to come back when they turn it on again. She figures the fountain will be a big hit, especially on a hot summer day.
"Yeah, you're probably going to have quite a few kids running around here, that's for sure," Michaelis said.
