Officials Prepare For Execution

October 15, 2012, 5:00 PM by Brady Mallory

Officials Prepare For Execution
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Department of Corrections officials will carry out Eric Robert's execution in what is defined as, "professional, humane and dignified."

As officials prepare for the lethal injection, Robert has had the weekend to prepare himself. On Saturday night, Robert ate his last meal. He requested moose tracks ice cream. For religious purposes, he has been fasting for 40 hours before his execution.

Robert is thinking about his last hours on earth in a small holding cell near the death chamber at the South Dakota State Penitentiary. Robert is on 24 hour surveillance until he is put to death.

On Monday night, with just about 12 footsteps, he will walk into the death chamber where he will be strapped to a table.  The warden and a trained staff member will put two IV's into veins in both of Robert's arms.

Under South Dakota law, lethal injection can be administered using three drugs, two drugs or one drug.  Robert will be put to death using one drug.  According to a release from prison officials, Robert should not feel any pain as he is dying.

Witnesses will watch from four rooms that surround the chamber.  When everything is ready, the blinds will open, allowing the witnesses to see the process.

The Attorney General, the judge, the State's Attorney and the Minnehaha County Sheriff have been invited to witness the execution. Two media witnesses are also allowed in, as well as family members of both Johnson and Robert.  However, Robert's lawyer said none of his client's friends or family are expected to attend.

Once the curtain is open, and before the drugs are administered, Robert will have the option to say any final words.
