Three new sheets of recreational ice are coming to the Sioux Falls area after ground breaks on the new multi-million dollar indoor facility.
After decades of planning and years of fundraising, construction of the SCHEELS IcePlex is now underway.
The $8 million facility will include amenities that organizers say are lacking in the area, including three NHL regulation-sized sheets of ice, locker rooms and bleacher seating.
Most of the money has been donated by private donors, with $3 million coming from the city and Chamber of Commerce. It will be used by more than 400 children as part of the hockey and figure skating clubs.
Construction begins next week and a completion date is scheduled for September of next year.
Coming up tonight on KELOLAND News, Hailey Higgins talks with a hockey player who says he's waited ten years for this groundbreaking.
