Friends, family and co-workers honor the life of Turner County Deputy Chad Mechels who died five years ago today in the line of duty.
Deputy Mechels was shot and killed when he responded to a well-being call at a home west of Marion in 2009.
Deputy Mechels had served with the Turner County Sheriff's Department for five months when he was killed. He had previously served with the Lake County Sheriff's Department and Kingsbury County Sheriff's Department, for a total of five years of law enforcement experience.
The 32-year-old is survived by his wife, and children who were 7 and three at the time.
“It's still pretty tough, five years seems like a long time. In some days it's forever ago and some days it's yesterday,” wife Jamie Mechels-Rowe said.
“It's important that we remember not only chad but all of the law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty,” Turner County Sheriff Byron Nogelmeier said.
Ethan Johns pled guilty to second degree murder for the shooting was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
