Odds Of Below Zero Highs

February 1, 2013, 6:16 AM by Scot Mundt

Odds Of Below Zero Highs

While school kids slept in across much of eastern KELOLAND, the cars groaned as they started Thursday morning.  Many locations in central and eastern KELOLAND had temperatures in the single digits and teens below zero.

As the sun shone Thursday afternoon, it did little to help the temperatures warm as many locations in the central and east stayed below zero.  Having highs below zero is uncommon, but it may not be as uncommon as you think.

Since 1990, Sioux Falls has had a below zero high 32 times.  In the 1990s, it happened 23 times. In the 2000s, it occurred only seven time, and so far this decade, Sioux Falls has had below zero highs only twice. Both occurring in January 2010.

Temperatures will be below zero again for Friday morning, but the cold weather will be short lived with temperatures warming above average by Sunday.
