The cloud cover and cold air on Friday, along with recent rain and snow we've seen, are quite a change from October 2011. A year ago, we were experiencing warm, dry weather. This month has been much cooler with better chances for precip.
The reason behind that difference has to do with the upper air patterns. In 2011, a ridge in the jet stream was the dominating factor. This type of pattern blocks storm systems, in turn keeping much of KELOLAND warm and dry.
This year seems to be just the opposite. Steady hits of cooler weather along with rain and snow chances have been common as cold fronts move in from the north.
It has been studied that the pattern in October and early November can dictate the pattern for the winter. This should mean more moisture than what we had last winter.
