Northern State University's marching band is back from Washington, D.C. after marching in the inaugural parade.
They returned to frigid temperatures, reminding them they’re home in South Dakota. But many of them still have their minds on the experience back in Washington, D.C.
"Probably just the moment we walked by the President and I felt a lot of pride for my band being chosen out of so many applicants," sophomore Brooke Mathey said.
This was NSU's second time within ten years marching in an inaugural parade. So, the director had already experienced one but the students hadn't.
Senior Yvonne Freese was shocked to find out she'd get the opportunity.
"You never think of things like that until it happens,” Freese said. “And I'm just blessed to be a part of it I guess."
As the band passed the President most members tried to catch a quick glance; some even tried to catch his attention.
"I waved at him and he kind of waved back and I was like, 'Yes, he saw me!' But I don't know if he was actually waving at me but I'm going to say he was," Freese said.
The band can claim a big accomplishment. It put in a lot of time practicing and fundraising since learning they would participate in the parade only one month ago.
"I know it was a lot of work and a lot of us were absolutely exhausted but it was more than worth it. I mean, the experience we gained from it whether we become teachers or no matter what profession we go into, we'll be able to remember it and share it with others," Mallard said.
Even though the trip is over, the fundraising isn't. The marching band still needs to raise close to $30,000 before meeting its goal. You can contact the NSU Foundation at 605-626-2550 to help them out.
