Residents of Lead on Nov. 6 will decide the future of parking in the western South Dakota city's downtown.
The city has been considering how best to redesign Main Street when the state Transportation Department replaces it in 2014. The issue has prompted heated discussions at City Commission meetings and in online forums for more than the year.
Citizens eventually petitioned to put the matter on the general election ballot.
State transportation officials have suggested parking be removed from the street for safety reasons. Some residents think that would lead to a more attractive downtown, while others believe it would hurt businesses.
