Not Much Water In This Snow

December 27, 2012, 6:15 PM by Scot Mundt

Not Much Water In This Snow

As dry as we've been the past six months, the snow should have held off until late morning in Sioux Falls. That's because the atmosphere is usually too dry to get snow to the ground. But as we all know now, that wasn't the case. And snow continued through the morning hours.

When the snow is over on Friday, there will be areas in southeast KELOLAND that received more than three inches of snow, but if you melt it down you'll only get about one-tenth to two-tenths of an inch of water.  That's almost a 20 to one snow to water ratio.

In fact, in order to make up for the nine inches of precipitation Sioux Falls has skipped out on this year, using the 20 to one ratio, we would have to receive 180 inches of this type of snow in order to dampen the drought.

But with frozen ground, a lot of the benefits of any snow won't be felt until the grounds thaws out. But I think many people would rather wait until the late winter months and into early spring when the snow will have a higher water content and has a better chance to get into the ground.

And though we'll get little moisture out of this latest round of snow, people who farm tell me that any moisture is still good to see.
