As voters prepare to decide the fate of a south side Walmart in Tuesday's election, progress on the north side Walmart is ticking right along.
Construction crews on the city's northwest side are taking advantage of the spring weather to do exterior work around the Walmart going in at 60th Street North and Marion Road. Van Bursell can see the progress from his front yard.
"Every day I drive by and, 'Oh, look, they're a little bit further and a little bit further.' I'm really excited for them to come, to get out here," Bursell said.
Northwest developers say this Walmart is welcomed by neighbors, in part, because there were virtually no services out here for them.
"The convenience--the north side really needed something, and that's what it brings," neighbor Charles Anderson said.
Walmart has its management team in place for the Northside store and set up a hiring center on Carolyn Avenue last week.
"We're really anticipating interest in the new positions at the northwest store," Delia Garcia of Walmart said.
Despite South Dakota's low unemployment rate, Walmart doesn't think it'll have much difficulty filling the 250 part and full-time positions for the new store.
"Most of our management team started in hourly positions, so they'll be plenty of positions and plenty of opportunities for folks who want to start a career and in retail or a career at Walmart," Garcia said.
Walmart expects to begin stocking the shelves of this store in June, with a target opening date of late this summer.
