No Water For Alcester After Water Main Break

January 14, 2013, 5:15 PM by Stephanie Gregory

No Water For Alcester After Water Main Break
ALCESTER, SD -

Whether they're at home or at work, it's been a long day without water for people in Alcester.

"They said it was going to be fixed by tonight. I have high hopes but they said it was supposed to be fixed yesterday so hopefully they get the water back on today," Lexy Schempp said while working at Alcester Drug.

A water main broke late Friday night. Alcester's Fire Chief says the city waited until Sunday to work on it because they didn't want to interfere with a big high school basketball tournament on Saturday.

Dan Waterman with Waterman Backhoe says it's not an easy fix.

"Getting the concrete and the frost broken loose so we can find the wires to get dig below the wires so we can find the pipe so we can fix it," Waterman said.

The water went off late Sunday morning and Monday, the town is shutting down.  A cafe is closed, a coffee shop is closed and Alcester students got the full day off.

"We're hopeful we can get those kids back in school tomorrow," Waterman said.

In the meantime, folks in the town are grabbing gallons of water off the shelves from the local grocery store.

"People are understanding.  They say 'Hey, we have a water break.  We have no water' and it's been good for business for selling water.  And that's been good for us," Don Drown employee at Total Shop said.

Hoven schools also closed early on Monday due to a water main break.
