MITCHELL, SD -
The two candidates for South Dakota's lone seat in the U.S. House apparently will not debate at the South Dakota State Fair.
Republican Rep. Kristi Noem earlier said she would not debate Democrat Matt Varilek at the State Fair because the event was being sponsored by the South Dakota Farmers Union, which she said is a partisan organization that favors Democrats.
The Mitchell Daily Republic then offered to sponsor the debate. Varilek agreed to attend, and Noem's campaign was considering it.
But State Fair Manager Jerome Hertel then said it is too late to schedule the debate during the fair, which runs from Aug. 30 to Sept. 3. He says there is no location available on the fairgrounds large enough to handle a debate.
