A leaking gas line erupted into flames before noon in Dell Rapids, but no injuries have been reported.
The explosion occurred near 9th Street and State Avenue after 11 a.m. Tuesday. A contractor boring underneath the street hit the gas line, causing a leak. The ignition occurred later, but authorities are unsure what caused the fire to start. A stalled car near the explosion has been burned by the fire, but the occupants escaped without injury.
MidAmerican Energy crews arrived on the scene at around 1:45 p.m. The affected gas line is a main line for the town. Crews are digging under the street to clamp the line and permanently disable the flow of gas.
Officials hope to have the line disabled and the fire stopped by 3 p.m. In the meantime, a two-to-three block radius surrounding the fire has been evacuated. Firefighters are on the scene spraying the affected area with water to stop the spread of fire.
