A tiny spider found on the Fort Pierre National Grassland has been named after the area in central South Dakota.
Theridion pierre is its official name.
Arachnologist Brian Patrick from Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell suspected it was a new species when he and several interns found the millimeter-long arachnid in 2011 and 2012.
He sent his findings to Harvard University where a world expert on that family of spiders confirmed the find and named the species for the grassland.
