New Scam Involves Unclaimed Property

May 23, 2014, 10:59 AM by Brandon Van Westen

New Scam Involves Unclaimed Property
PIERRE, SD -

Several South Dakota residents have received notices from National Claimant Services regarding unclaimed property, but State Treasurer Rich Sattgast wants to save people from paying additional fees.

A business, often referred to as a "locator," sends a notice to a person with unclaimed property held by the state. But when the locator obtains the property from the state, additional fees are tacked on. Locators are legitimate businesses, but Sattgast says to avoid any unnecessary fees, contact the Treasurer's Office directly.

Find out if you have unclaimed property currently held by the State of South Dakota.

“National Claimant Services is a legitimate asset locator, Sattgast said. "But to avoid the fees associated with their service the public can contact my office directly free of charge.”

If there are any questions about a suspicious phone call, contact the Treasurer's Office at 605-773-3379 before giving any personal information.
