New Pictures Show Big Buck Alive And Well

New Pictures Show Big Buck Alive And Well
SIOUX FALLS, SD - The big buck, as it's often called, has been living on the city's northeast edge for the past couple of years and despite rumors to the contrary, he is still very much alive.

It all started with this YouTube video in 2008. The somewhat fuzzy internet video attracted thousands of views, and was so popular it eventually had to be taken off the website. Now, years later the buck still isn't camera shy, and is once again showing off for the lens.

"He's still alive and well and developing real fast," Jake Wright said.

Jake Wright is the photographer behind some new photos of the buck. He's been following the potential record-setting deer for five years now.

"He got my attention, thought he was an awesome looking buck, took some picture and followed him around a little bit," Wright said.

Many feared the stupendous stag wouldn't make it through the tough winter, or would fall victim to a car on nearby highways. But Wright held out hope.

"I didn't really buy it. Then last week he show up and he's got a son that's going to be as awesome as he is and he's got a grandson. They all stand together, moving around.

Wright says he often sees the big buck and offspring walking through the same area and it's not uncommon for them to walk through and come back about six hours later. It's something Wright enjoys watching, and he hopes others do, too. And the only thing the bow hunter wants to shoot the deer with, is a camera.

"He is more than a trophy now, as they was he's developed and the way he is now, I would never ever shoot him, because let him preserve what he is and what he stands for," Wright said.

But he also has a word of warning for those who'd like to see the attraction first hand: the big buck is still a wild animal.

"Don't pressure him. Don't go traipsing through the valleys and try to find him to spook him off, because he will move. He didn't get that that big being stupid. And if you get a lot of people out there close up, he's going to move, he's going to run somewhere he feels safe," Wright said.

And just in case you're figuring that big buck would make a nice trophy, you should know that, even when in deer hunting season, hunting is illegal inside Sioux Falls city limits. Game, Fish and Parks officers also routinely patrolled the area where the big buck is known to roam.
