New Judge Sworn In

January 11, 2013, 6:15 PM by Don Jorgensen

New Judge Sworn In
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Commit a crime and you might face South Dakota's newest judge.

Mark Salter was sworn in as the 35th judge in the 2nd Judicial Circuit today, serving Lincoln and Minnehaha counties.

Salter, who has 20 years of law experience, talked about what this day means to him.

"It's almost indescribable the emotions I feel.  For me, a great opportunity to serve in a direct constitutional role in our government and I'm grateful to have this chance to do it," Salter said.

He says the judicial system will face some unique challenges in the coming years.

"We always confront new and emerging issues we have to deal with.  I suppose we are no different than the political side of government, but what time has taught us is that is our democracy and form of government, each component of our government has to adapt and react and ours will as well," Salter said.

Salter was appointed by Governor Dennis Daugaard and replaces Judge William Srstka who retired.
