Expansion, Upgrade At Timber Lake School

September 6, 2012, 5:59 PM by Erich Schaffhauser

Expansion, Upgrade At Timber Lake School
TIMBER LAKE, SD -

Students may dread the first day of school. But in Timber Lake they had a new $8 million expansion to look forward to.

There are eight new classrooms in the Timber Lake Middle School expansion. From athletics to arts, they join a lot of other new things in the school as well.

"It's awesome; it's very big," sixth grader Georgi Mendoza said.

That's the new theatre Mendoza is talking about with more than 200 seats in a town of more than 400.

Erich Schaffhauser: Are you excited about this gym?
Kyle Schumacher: Yes I am.

The gym is new too and so are the administration offices which go along with technology upgrades in the new classrooms.

"We're just really able to offer an outstanding educational experience with this new addition," Superintendent Jarod Larson said.

"We just appreciate everything about the new building," middle school special education teacher Deborah Meginuess said.

The new addition to the building was paid for in part using federal money through the stimulus package.

That is very similar to the old building this new one replaced. It was built with help from Works Progress Administration which was part of a stimulus program of the 1930s funding public projects to get people back to work.

But it's not the past people in Timber Lake are excited about. It's the additional options the small community has looking forward.

"It's been great to get the positive feedback from the community. It’s a facility the community can be proud of, the community can utilize," Larson said.

The stimulus paid for about $5 million of the project. The rest came from reserves the school had saved for projects like this.
