Updated laws to protect consumers are getting support from state lawmakers.
South Dakota's consumer laws haven't received a major overhaul since the early 1970s. The proposed changes take into account modern technology. They also provide harsher penalties for scammers. Misdemeanors would become felonies. The changes made it through committee Wednesday morning.
"When you look at the South Dakota Attorney General's office, we received over 30,000 consumer complaints last year, recovered over $9.5 million so there are serious scams, serious issues going on in South Dakota," Attorney General Marty Jackley said.
If the measure passes the House, its next step is the Governor's desk.
