New Additions To Sioux Empire Fair

August 1, 2014, 5:55 PM by Jared Ransom

New Additions To Sioux Empire Fair

It's a day full of ribbon cuttings at the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds.

"We think we have everything in place to rival last year, but we'll just see what happens. The weather impacts everything," Fair President Scott Wick said.

Several new additions were unveiled today, including a grandstand along Pioneer Lane, and the newest building on the grounds, the Pipestone Discovery Barn.

"To see something on paper is one thing, but to actually see it, I was very impressed. This will rival any discovery-type facility in the area, even including Minneapolis at the Minnesota State Fair," Board member Steve Munk said.

"Really kind of emotional to have a building this size, especially for a lot of the board members that have grown up raising animals and showing them at the fair," Wick said.

People at the barn will get to see how the life of many farm animals begins, including the potential for live births. It's a new fair experience that could get more people interested in agriculture.

"As human beings, we just live to see that. Whether we're at a park with Mother Nature or animals as a whole, just how that all works and the relationship we have with those animals," Munk said.

"As the message gets out there, I can see daycares and schools and people getting organized and getting busloads of people specifically for this building," Wick said.

The Pipestone Discovery Barn is just one of the many new additions to the Sioux Empire Fair this year, and it's a good sign of things to come in the years down the road. That future could include new and improved show areas and barns.

"There's always unique, upcoming opportunities that we're aware of, and it just becomes building those sponsorship opportunities with individuals to make it a reality. Go from concept to reality," Munk said.

The Sioux Empire Fair runs from August 1 through August 10. If you would like more information about this year's fair, visit the Sioux Empire Fair website.
